The Cricut Maker series represents Cricut’s most versatile lineup of cutting machines, capable of cutting 300+ materials — from delicate tissue paper and fabric to thick leather and balsa wood. Whether you have the original Maker or the latest Maker 5, this guide walks you through every step from unboxing to your very first cut.

Unbox and Check Contents

Open the box and confirm all items are present before you begin setup:
  • Cricut Maker machine
  • Power adapter
  • USB cable
  • LightGrip cutting mat (12” × 12”)
  • Fine-Point Blade (pre-installed in Clamp B)
  • Welcome book and getting-started materials
Keep the packaging until you have confirmed the machine works correctly.

Download Cricut Design Space

Go to cricut.com/setup on your Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Download and install the Cricut Design Space app. Design Space is free and is required to design and send cuts to your Maker.

Create or Sign In to Your Cricut Account

Open Design Space after installation. If you already have a Cricut account, sign in with your email and password. If you are new to Cricut, select Create Account and follow the prompts to register with your email address.

Power On Your Cricut Maker

Locate the power button on the right side of the machine. Press it once — the machine will power on and the status light will illuminate. Place the machine on a flat, stable surface with at least 10 inches of clearance in front and behind to allow the mat to feed freely.

Connect Your Maker to Your Device

Choose either a USB or Bluetooth connection:
Plug one end of the included USB cable into the port on the back of the Maker and the other end into your computer. Design Space will detect the machine automatically.

Complete the New Machine Setup Wizard

Design Space will detect your new machine and launch the New Machine Setup wizard automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions, which will confirm your machine model and guide you through the calibration steps.

Load the Practice Mat and Materials

When prompted by Design Space, place the included cardstock or practice material onto the LightGrip cutting mat, pressing it down firmly and smoothly. Align the mat with the guides on the machine’s roller bar, then press the Load/Unload arrows button to feed the mat into position.

Start the Test Cut

When Design Space signals that the machine is ready, the C button (the Cricut logo button on the front of the machine) will begin flashing. Press it to start the test cut. The machine will complete the practice project automatically.

Unload the Mat and Review Your Cut

After cutting is complete, press the Load/Unload button to eject the mat. Bend the mat away from the material — rather than peeling the material off the mat — to prevent curling. Inspect the cut to confirm clean, complete cuts through the material.
Maker 3, 4, and 5 support Smart Materials, which allow matless cutting — feed the material directly into the machine without a mat. Maker 3 and newer models also support faster Smart Material cutting speeds for higher-output projects.
